Fear shows up in our bodies in so many different ways. The chemical response causes all of the physical responses that we experience. Then our minds move to protect us and keep us from harm. It is so primal and common among all creatures and yet we hide from fear. I aim to embrace fear as a driving force. One that can teach me a lot about what it means to be human, to be alive.

With this piece, you can learn that fear is simply just a chemical change that occurs within your body that forces your mind and muscles to react a certain way. By breaking fear down into this form, you gain the ability to embrace the effects and allow them to propel you into action rather than fall into passivity.

We feel fear throughout our entire body. Adrenaline and cortisol, two chemicals our brains release when we’re afraid, can drastically alter our state of awareness and our physical response to stressors. Our hearts race, our pupils dilate, and we may even feel a sudden burst of energy come on. Some people even feel positive emotions under fear and stress, and enjoy the thrills of this heightened state.

Fear can push you and your body to act, or it can make you freeze in place. And the most intriguing part about it is that this phenomenon is so common that is experienced among every creature in the animal kingdom. Our natural instincts trigger the mind and body to panic, forcing us to act in some way to save our own lives.
